Why calling yourself “disruptive” can ruin your tech startup’s reputation

Communication for tech startups faces a serious differentiation problem. For years, words such as “disruptive”, “innovative” or “revolutionary” dominated sales pitches, investor presentations, websites and marketing campaigns. However, today those empty terms no longer generate impact or credibility in the market.

The problem is not that companies have stopped innovating, but that practically all of them claim to do so.

When every competitor uses the same vocabulary, communication for startups loses strength and the target audience stops perceiving those attributes as a real competitive advantage. To stand out in the B2B sector and win customers and investors, it is essential to abandon generic labels

In an environment where organizations assess risks before adopting new technologies, credibility weighs more than promises.

Corporate customers buy results, not labels

Purchasing decisions in companies usually involve different players: technical areas, finance, general management and, in many cases, compliance or security teams.

In that context, describing yourself as “disruptive” offers little useful information.

What customers need to understand is:

The conversation stops focusing on novelty and shifts to value.

Trust is built by explaining innovation, not just naming it

A study by 2024 states that the acceptance of new technologies depends, to a large extent, on how organizations explain their impact and manage innovation. The study highlights that implementing innovation responsibly and clearly communicating its benefits is as important as the innovation itself.

In other words, claiming that a solution is innovative does not guarantee trust.

Companies need to demonstrate:

Innovation generates greater credibility when it can be explained clearly.

The word “disruptive” lost its power to differentiate

The term “disruption” still has meaning within business strategy and innovation. However, its indiscriminate use in commercial messaging has reduced its ability to distinguish one company from another.

Even analysts such as Gartner warn that organizations must separate the enthusiasm generated by emerging technologies from their real business value, assessing concrete benefits before market-created expectations.

For a corporate buyer, hearing that a startup is “disruptive” says much less than knowing:

Proof outweighs labels.

How to build a message that truly differentiates a tech startup

1. Talk about the problem before the technology

Customers buy solutions, not technical features.

Starting the conversation from the challenge the customer faces makes it easier to understand the value of the proposition.

2. Replace adjectives with evidence

Instead of claiming a company is innovative, it is more effective to explain:

Evidence strengthens credibility.

3. Build thought leadership

Publishing analyses, studies, trends and specialized knowledge helps the company be recognized for its expertise and not only for its commercial messages.

Thought leadership strengthens reputation in the long term.

4. Speak the customer’s language

A chief financial officer, a CIO and an operations manager do not evaluate a technology solution from the same perspective.

Adapting the message to the audience improves understanding and facilitates decision-making.

5. Turn innovation into a verifiable story

Stories backed by data, real cases and testimonials generate more trust than abstract concepts. The goal is not to convince with words, but to demonstrate with results.

Differentiation no longer depends on sounding innovative, but on demonstrating value

Innovation will remain one of the engines of business growth. What is changing is the way it is communicated.

Tech startups that keep using generic messages such as “we are disruptive” compete with hundreds of companies saying exactly the same thing.

In contrast, those that clearly explain the problem they solve, show evidence of impact and build a narrative based on results have a greater chance of generating trust among corporate customers, investors and strategic allies.

At Altavoz Comunicaciones we help startups and technology companies develop communication strategies that turn technical capabilities into clear, differentiating, business-oriented messages.
